Geocoin Query

If you are interested in producing your own geocoin, whether it is a personal geocoin, personal swag item, or something to commemorate or celebrate an occasion, we will be more than happy to assist. We have been designing and producing geocoins since 2020.

How does it work?
Once you have an idea of what you want, we would love to work with you. We can help you with all aspects of producing and designing the geocoin, or you can use another designer and just use us for the production. We do not charge you for our design work unless you take the design to another company for production, and we then charge a £100 artwork fee. If you choose not to pursue the production, you will not be charged a design fee.

We do not charge you for anything until you are happy with the design and happy with the estimates provided. Once the estimate has been accepted by you, we will convert this to an invoice to collect payment. Following payment, we will submit the designs to Groundspeak for approval and order your trackable codes. If you wish to do this yourself, you will need to provide us with the trackable codes before we move to production. If there are any issues with the design and you decide not to proceed, a full refund will be issued.

The production process typically takes 6 to 8 weeks from the point of ordering to the time when you can hold the geocoins in your hands. Some of the things that may vary this time include social, health, and economic issues, resource availability, or delays with the delivery. We will check every geocoin by hand before sending them to your shipping address. If any issues are identified, we will resolve these with the mint and send the corrections to you once replaced. If you have a deadline you wish to achieve, please let us know in advance so that we can work with the mint to try and meet expectations.

How much does it cost?
The price of producing a geocoin is always dependent on exactly what you want, how complex the design is, and if you have any special finishes (glitter, glow, pearlescent etc.). For producing 100 geocoins, the average is £5.50/geocoin, 150 we see this drop to £5/geocoin, and 200 to £4.50/geocoin. This price includes a trackable code, which is a fixed price of $1.50 per code. You can also add a custom trackable icon for a one-time fee of $150.

What does everything mean?
While you may be very familiar with handling and buying geocoins, you may not understand the different terminologies and qualities of every geocoin. We’ll try and clear some of those details up for you. The Geocaching help centre also has some guidance: https://www.geocaching.com/help/index.php?pg=kb.chapter&id=68

  • Quantity – We usually recommend ordering at least 100 to make them cost-effective. Above 100, the “per geocoin” price comes down, as the cost of the mould is split across more geocoins.
  • Size – The standard geocoin size is 45mm, but we can produce them as large or small as you want. This includes flat and “3D” geocoins.
  • Soft or Hard enamel – This is always a tricky decision. Hard enamel is filled and ground down to be flush with the edge of the metal of the geocoin, where soft enamel dries and creates a dip. This is purely personal preference, but soft enamel is usually cheaper due to it being a less manual process.
  • Base Metal – We can produce geocoins in Zinc Alloy, Iron, or Bronze.
Zinc Alloy is the cheapest and lightest but can be produced in different thicknesses. Zinc Alloy is used for “3D” geocoins as it can be poured into the mould and pick up all of the 3D details.
Iron produces a mid-priced, mid-weight geocoin. This is great for adding weight to your geocoin without adding lots of price to the production and shipping. The geocoin uses a die-struck mould and is always 3mm thick.
Bronze is the heaviest and most expensive metal for a geocoin. It adds a lot of weight to the geocoin and also costs the most for production and shipping. Bronze is also die-struck and always produced as a 3mm thick geocoin.
  • Plating – This is the finish you see that is plated to the base metal. We can use Silver, Gold, Copper, Brass, Nickel, Black Nickel, Rainbow Plating, Dyed Black, or spray painted. These platings are available in a shiny finish, matt finish, antique finish or even double plated.
  • Trackable Prefix – You can choose your own trackable prefix for the codes, such as RC, GS, PC etc.
  • Custom Trackable Icon – You can choose to have your own trackable icon image added to the series of geocoins. This is the default icon:
  • Custom Activation Code – You can choose an activation code between 3 and 10 alphanumeric characters
